Mikrotik router hotspot setup
1. Install the User Manager Package
- Download the User Manager package for your router’s architecture from the MikroTik website.
- Upload the
.npkfile to the router’s files directory. - Reboot the router for the package to be installed.
2. Configure the Hotspot
- Create a new bridge, add your wireless and Ethernet ports to it, and assign an IP address to this bridge.
- Go to IP > Hotspot, click Hotspot Setup, and select your newly created bridge as the interface.
- Complete the setup wizard, giving your hotspot a DNS name, and create a local user for testing.
- In Server Profile, select your hotspot server profile and go to the RADIUS tab to enable Use Radius.
- In the Hotspot > Server Profile settings, go to the Login tab and enable Cookies and potentially a trial login for initial testing.
- Configure the hotspot to only allow one connection per MAC address.
3. Configure the RADIUS Server (User Manager)
- Access the User Manager by visiting
http://<hotspot_ip_address>/user manin a web browser. - Log in with the default credentials (admin, no password, or a password you create).
- In the User Manager, add the router using the loopback IP address (127.0.0.1) and the same secret password used in the MikroTik settings.
- Create new user profiles with specific limitations, such as upload and download speed limits.
- Create users and assign them to the profiles.
4. Test the Hotspot
- Connect a device to the hotspot network.
- The device should be redirected to the hotspot login page.
- Log in with the credentials of a user you created in the User Manager.
- Verify that the user is authenticated and can access the internet.
